LUDLOW — The Division I Western Mass quarterfinal between Pittsfield and Ludlow wasn’t a home game for the Generals on paper.
However, by the way PHS treated Lusitano Stadium Monday evening, it might as well have been. The No. 5 Generals, who previously won the Valley’s summer league tournament on that same artificial turf, dominated play en route to a 4-1 victory over the No. 4 Lions.
NORTHFIELD — Berkshire County as a whole only went 2-7 in individual championship matches at the 2017 Division III Western Mass Wrestling meet, but by Saturday night, that meant little to the Monument Mountain Spartans.
After a two-year absence from the regional podium, the Spartans made a triumphant return at Pioneer Valley Regional last weekend. Monument rocked the team standings, rolling up 203 points, nearly 50 more than second-place Hampden Charter (153). Taconic placed fifth with 124, while Mt. Greylock was ninth with 113 and Mt. Everett 16th with 47.5.
NORTH ADAMS — Taconic Ice Hockey took its time in the visitor locker room at Peter W. Foote Vietnam Veterans Memorial Skating Rink Wednesday night. The Braves were drained, emotionally and physically by a 4-3 win over host Wahconah.
They survived a total of 11:30 of penalty time, including a four-minute major and a full three-minute period of whistled 5-on-3. The second period alone featured 10 of those minutes, which allowed the Warriors to equalize what was a 3-1 deficit before the final 15 began.
HAVERHILL — After a series of dramatic extra-inning wins in the American Legion state tournament, Pittsfield Post 68 earned a slightly more comfortable 6-0 victory in the semifinals over Northbridge.
“This was definitely nice. The last couple of games have been really tough, coming down to the last innings,” said catcher Dom Traversa. “This one was nice to be able to relax a bit in the last couple innings, knowing we were ahead by a good bunch of runs.”
LENOX — Playing with no head coach in a game that featured more than enough chirping between the dugouts and a couple different umpire warnings, the Lenox Baseball team had to rely on their own grit and determination.
The Millionaires trailed twice in the late innings and both times reached back and came up with an answer. The second response was a resounding one, as senior Mike Downer went the other way with a walk-off RBI double to right filed in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Lenox topped Drury 6-5 in a doozy of an extra-inning affair Friday afternoon at War Memorial.
SPRINGFIELD — For 12 seniors on Taconic’s Boys Basketball team, the start of Monday night’s game must have been a horror show playing out in slow-motion.
Three consecutive one-and-done appearances for the Braves had led to a 10-3 deficit for the No. 2 seed with 30 seconds left in the first quarter of the Division II Western Mass semifinals.
NORTH ADAMS — It has been a whirlwind couple months for Loren Stock.
MCLA announced the hiring of its new Women’s Basketball Head Coach on Sept. 28, 2016. Exactly two months later, she saw her team put into motion the full extent of changes she’s been working to make.
The Trailblazers used an explosive second half to pull away from Lasell College at home, winning 55-36. MCLA improved to 3-2 under Stock, but this was a culmination of sorts for the first-year coach and her veteran-led team.
